We all sleep, but why and how are still a mystery. What is certain is that a healthy sleep pattern can drastically improve our mental and physical health, as well as ensure we perform at our peak. When people feel and perform at their best, their own assessment of their lives and circumstances improves drastically.

What is CBT-I?

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Insomnia, or CBT-I, combines various techniques and approaches including cognitive, behavioural and psychoeducational, to identify thoughts, feelings and behaviours which are contributing to the symptoms of insomnia. We will then reframe these misconceptions and challenges, resulting in better sleep. CBT-I aims to improve sleep quality and quantity without relying on medication.

How does CBT-I work?

CBT-I works by addressing thoughts, behaviours, and habits affecting sleep. It challenges negative beliefs about sleep, replacing them with healthier ones through cognitive restructuring. CBT-I typically involves several techniques such as sleep restriction, relaxation training, and cognitive therapy. These techniques help reframe negative thoughts about sleep, establish a consistent sleep schedule, and improve sleep habits.

Why choose CBT-I?

Healthy sleep is essential. Improving sleep has been proven to increase productivity and reduce the chances of mental health problems developing. Anxiety and stress, depression, anger, grief and trauma are some of the most common causes of insomnia and the symptoms of these conditions are also often highly exacerbated by lack of sleep.

Who can benefit from CBT-I?

CBT-I offers relief to individuals struggling with chronic insomnia or sleep difficulties, encompassing those experiencing trouble falling asleep, staying asleep, or waking up prematurely. It's beneficial for those seeking drug-free approaches, individuals with underlying conditions contributing to sleep problems, or those unable to find relief through medications. CBT-I suits various age groups and can assist shift workers or those with irregular sleep schedules. Its adaptable techniques cater to diverse needs, making it suitable for people motivated to change their sleep patterns and willing to engage in structured therapy, offering hope for improved sleep quality and duration for a broad spectrum of individuals experiencing sleep disturbances.

How long does CBT-I take to work?

The timeline for CBT-I's effectiveness varies. Some notice improvements within a few weeks, but the full benefits often emerge over several weeks to months. Initial adjustments in sleep habits and thought patterns may yield early progress, while more entrenched issues might take longer to address. Consistency and commitment to the therapy are crucial; gradual changes in sleep patterns and cognitive shifts occur, leading to sustainable improvements. While individual differences exist, CBT-I typically demonstrates its long-term efficacy in enhancing sleep quality, making it a worthwhile investment in achieving lasting and natural improvements in both sleep duration and overall sleep experience for many individuals grappling with insomnia.

Are there any side effects of CBT-I?

CBT-I is generally considered safe and doesn’t have significant side effects compared to medication. However, some people might experience temporary discomfort or frustration as they adjust to new sleep patterns or behavioural changes.
